Mamelodi Sundowns have issued a second injury update on the availability of talisman Themba Zwane with their trip to Egypt and a reunion with ex-coach Pitso Mosimane looming.
The Brazilians will travel to Cairo for the first leg of their CAF Champions League quarterfinal clash against Al Ahly, where Mosimane will be sitting in the dugout plotting to deny his former employers another continental title.
Meanwhile, Downs are hoping their match-winner Zwane can be available after he missed Sunday’s DStv Premiership win over TS Galaxy in Nelspruit.
“We are hopeful from the doctors and it looks like he will be able to play the next match in Egypt and we are hopeful that everything goes according to plan,” Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi told the media.
‘Mshishi’ as Zwane is affectionately known, was substituted as early as the 11th minute when Downs beat Maritzburg United last week Wednesday.
There were fears the injury could rule him out of the Ahly clash.
“But it never really looked very serious – we had to take precaution to make sure we don’t aggravate it, hence we took him out early without even giving it a chance. It was never really a tear, but probably a strain that could have easily resulted into a tear had he continued with the match. We’ve got enough days now before our next game and the doctors had said within a week he may be able to help us,” Mngqithi explained.
Downs face Ahly in Cairo at 7pm on Saturday, with the second leg scheduled a week later at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
