Ajax Cape Town will in the coming months make a call on whether to try hold on to a Mamelodi Sundowns player currently on loan at the club.
Siphesihle Mkhize joined the Urban Warriors from the Brazilians at the start of the 2019/20 season and while he has been a regular, club CEO Ari Efstathiou has admitted that the youngster is ‘far from ready’ for the top-flight.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, Ajax were top of the GladAfrica Championship and are still hopeful of gaining promotion when the league does resume.
“It is very important that we make up a team that can compete in the Premier Soccer League– Mkhize is a fantastic player, but there’s two major concerns for us,” Efstathiou addressing the SA Football Journalists Association, said.
“He is 21 and holding a very important position for us as a defensive midfielder and the question is whether he can maintain his progress because he has done well since he’s come to us. But do you want to start with Mkhize as your first choice No.6 (should Ajax get promoted), I am not convinced at this point.”
Ajax have said that they, should promotion to the Absa Premiership be a reality in the coming months, are keen to recruit experience and blend it in with their youthful side.

“The other issue is trying to avoid loaning players as much as you can, but apart from that he is a fantastic young player that’s got a lot of potential, but he is far from ready. So if he had to go back to Sundowns he probably won’t play for a while and on the other hand do we keep him in that position? Is it better for us to try out our young players from the academy or still have Mkhize there? We need to discuss that,” said the Ajax boss.
