Masandawana welcomed back Themba Zwane to the line-up after missing the loss to Orlando Pirates, with Sphelele Mkhulise dropping to the bench while United were without Teboho Mokoena through suspension.

The sides were cautious in the early stages but Sibusiso Vilakazi had a chance to grab the lead for Sundowns in the 11th minute after latching onto a through ball over the defence, but his attempted lob sailed wide with Ronwen Williams beatn.

Pitso Mosimane's men managed to break the deadlock in the 32nd minute as Tebogo Langerman's cross deflected off Onismor Bhasera and into the path of Zwane, who made no mistake from close range.

The Brazilians should have been two goals with six minutes remaining of the first stanza after Matsatsantsa failed to deal with a cross inside the area but Gaston Sirino struck a left-footed volley over the bar from 12-yars out.

Kaitano Tembo's army were forceful going forward early in the second stanza and they were rewarded with a penalty eight minutes from the break after Kudakwashe Mahachi was brought down by Andile Jali. Dean Furman took the responsibity and slotted into the bottom corner.

However, Sundowns restored their lead in the 65th minute after Thapelo Morena volleyed home Hlompho Kekana's cross at the near post to the top corner from a tight angle.

Mosimane was forced to make his first substitution with 12 minutes remaining after Morena got injured and was replaced by Phakamani Mahlambi while Tembo brought on Thabo Qalinge for Mbule as the hosts pushed for the equaliser.

Mahlambi almost snatched the third goal for Masandawana in the last three minutes after raising his foot in the six-yard box to connect with Langerman's corner but Williams was at the right place as he smothered the shot as the encounter finished 2-1 to the visitors.

Here's how they lined up:
