Sundowns made one change to their line-up as Gaston Sirino returned from suspension, while Chippa made eight from the Nedbank Cup loss to Kaizer Chiefs in Gerald Modisane, debutant Bangaly Keita, Chris Komane, Mark Mayambela, Ruzaigh Gamildien, Tebogo Makobela, Daine Klate and Rhulani Manzini.

The opportunity to overtake Orlando Pirates at the top of the table almost led Masandawana to an early but Mosa Lebusa hit the side-netting from a tight angle after just two minutes.

For all their possession, the home side were behind on 25 minutes after Mayambela turned inside the area to send powerful strike past a static Kennedy Mweene.

The Port Elizabeth-based side pushed for more goals, as Manzini’s powerful free-kick from outside the area required a from Mweene, who was able to gather at the second time of asking.

However, Sundowns levelled matters just before the break when an un-marked Hlompho Kekana sent a thumping header past Mbongeni Mzimela following a set-piece from Sirino, who has now registered 20 assists across all competitions.

After a quiet start to the half, Sundowns went in front after 56 minutes when Sirino’s defence-splitting pass found Tebogo Langerman, who crossed for Sibusiso Vilakazi to tap home.

Looking for a comeback, Chippa made a double change 61 minutes in as Thabo Rakhale and Andile Mbenyane replaced Mayambela and Klate.

Their lights went out seven minutes later, as Sirino marked his return with a bottom corner finish following a loose ball.

Chippa reduced the deficit with six minutes remaining when Manzini side-footed into the bottom corner after a well-timed delivery from Rakhale.

However, Mweene ensured Sundowns walked away with the points with a double save in added time to deny Mbenyane and Manzini.
