To realise his dream of turning out for Al Ahly, should a deal be concluded, Gaston Sirino could become one of the most expensive transfers in Mamelodi Sundowns history.
Over the years, Masandawana have become more synonymous with splurging big money rather than receiving it on transfers, although that could change if the Brazilians get their way over the Uruguayan sensation.
Downs’ most valuable transfer to date has been that of Percy Tau in 2018. The Brazilians received a fee in the region of $3.2m (R54.3m) for the Lion of Judah from English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.
But that could all change if the Chloorkop outfit parts ways with their playmaker, Sirino.
As reported by the Siya crew in edition 1231 of Soccer Laduma, the Red Eagles, who are no shy spenders themselves, will have to fork out the big bucks if they are to land the 30-year-old who has been very vocal about his desire to move to Egypt.
Sirino still has four years to run on his contract in Mzansi and Siya sources have indicated that Downs’ asking price for the player is in the region of $3-million (±R42.6m), something that Ahly are yet to match. The Brazilians are believed to have increased that amount to around $5-million (±R70-million).
Given his age, it is unlikely that Al Ahly will pay that kind of money for the player, but a source revealed that the Egyptian giants are preparing an offer of around $3.5-million (±R49.8m), which would effectively put him in the top three Sundowns transfers of all time!
All the power does lie with the Brazilians however, and it remains to be seen whether they will part ways with a player who has contributed to 61 goals in 126 appearances in three-and-a-half seasons.
