UL Look To Upset Udubs
Bottom side UL are set for a daunting trip to Cape Town, where they will be hunting their first Varsity Football victory without the help of influential captain Pholoshi Bapela.
The central defender plays a huge role in leading his team and often directs play from the back. UL coach Burney Mampshika has often praised the talented centre-back and is lamenting playing without him next week.
“We rely on Bapela to lead from the back, so it is disappointing but we have capable replacements who will be ready to fill the gaps on Monday,” he said.
Team manager Danny Dhlamini has revealed that Kgotlelo ‘Ace’ Kgoete will be drafted in to replace Bapela at the back and the captain’s armband has been handed to midfielder Edgar ‘Afro’ Mafunisa.
Mampshika knows a confident home side are laying in wait to welcome the lacklustre Limpopo students to UWC Stadium on Monday night. The Cape students are in high spirits on the back of two recent wins, but the UL coach insists his team will give their all next week.
“It will be tough. We are now in a position where we simply have to win all of our remaining fixtures and hope the teams above us slip if we want to get into the semi-finals,” he said.
UL are currently second from bottom of the Varsity Football standings with just one point from four games.
