You’ve got to feel for Thamsanqa Sangweni, who did really well during his loan spell with Ajax Cape Town, but has to report for preseason at Mamelodi Sundowns.
The younger brother of Orlando Pirates defender Siyabonga Sangweni may have started only seven league games since he joined the Urban Warriors during the January transfer window, but that was because he suffered an injury at some stage. It was good to see him do well, especially because he had a blistering start to his life as a Sundowns player, only to fade as time went by.
With the Brazilians having now signed Asavela Mbekile, and with the likes of Esrom Nyandoro, Sibusiso Khumalo and Hlompho Kekana also vying for the position he plays, what chance does he really have of continuing to make a name for himself at the club?
He has played for the national team at junior level and has one Bafana Bafana call-up, but that will be all that will be written next to his name if he does not find a way out of the club this coming season, either via another loan move or a permanent move away from the side.
He is a good player, but there just is no way he can bench Kekana, especially for a longer period of time.
What’s your take on Sangweni’s situation? How would you advise him or the club?
