Statement begins...
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all football clubs are created equal, that they are endowed by the PSL with certain untouchable rights - rights to win games and challenge for trophies...all in the pursuit of happiness.
To secure these rights, a team like Wits, who used to rely on homegrown youngsters, have finally declared their ambition to win things by bankrolling a high quality squad. So that whenever your Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates think they have a divine right to win everything because they're loaded, it is the right of The Students to challenge them.
This is because, in the course of football competitions like the Nedbank Cup and the MTN8, it becomes necessary to dissolve the notion that Chiefs, Downs and Bucs are always the favourites. It is to assume that even among the real football powers of planet Earth like Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Chelsea - that all football teams by nature are created equal.
The dimensions of the pitch and laws of the game dictate that all, including Gavin Hunt's recently cash-flush Wits, are entitled to win things if they find it within themselves to make use of their rich resources in the pursuit of a bloody football.
Such has been the long suffering of The Students’ faithful that it appears a good moment to declare that it is necessary to tear down the 'big three's' monopoly. The history of the present kings of South African football is one of repeated unfairness owing to having more money than everyone else.
That they have held an absolute tyranny over the rest of the PSL for close to 20 years bears no repeating. So now that Wits' coffers are full and our squad is blessed with talent, a declaration has been issued on behalf of the Clever Boys faithful.
It reads, "Today the Wits faithful in Johannesburg handed Downs, Bucs and Chiefs a final note stating that, unless they stop poaching all the best players from the so-called smaller clubs, a state of war would exist. We inform you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently Wits is at war with the big three."
We will fight them at FNB Stadium. We will fight them at Loftus Versveld. We will fight them at Orlando Stadium.
And, Gavin Hunt-willing, we will prevail.
