After Brendan Rodgers compared Raheem Sterling to Lionel Messi, many people laughed at the very suggestion that the 19-year-old winger is even fit to shine the Argentine superstar’s boots.
Sterling may not be on Messi’s level, but his performance against Southampton on Sunday can be considered as a statement that he might be en route to a meteoric rise to stardom.
Sterling managed to score a goal and provide the assist for Daniel Sturridge’s as well. He took four shots in the game, made two key passes and five successful dribbles. His pass success rate was a staggering 81.8% and he even managed three turnovers to showcase the completeness of his game.
Much like Cristiano Ronaldo, rather than Messi, Sterling is also a counter attacking threat and he’s slowly starting to show the kind of quality that both Ronaldo and Messi themselves would have been jealous of at his age.
It’s no surprise that Sterling is on Real Madrid’s radar and it would be fantastic if we managed to get him to commit to a new contract, so that he can grow into a superstar while still at Anfield and, hopefully in that time, he will manage to add a few trophies to his name that will provide evidence to just how good he really is.
