Invariably, I and many Bayern fans are fans of the German National Team. So, naturally, it was a great feeling when Germany won the World Cup this summer.
Furthermore, a vast majority of the starting line-up in the final was made up of Bayern players. However, the success of the German team has been to our detriment…
The players who had played major roles in the summer tournament in Brazil, like Phillip Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Jerome Boateng, are still struggling to return to fitness after their extended holiday breaks. Even Arjen Robben, who played as many games in the World Cup with Holland as his German teammates did, is not back to full fitness.
This is now becoming a great threat to our season, at least for the beginning. We’ve already lost the German Supercup, playing with a “B” team. And now, where we need to start the Bundesliga off on the right note, creating continuity in our attempt at a second consecutive title defence, we are finding ourselves very heavily depleted and it’s actually a little bit annoying.
Hopefully our squad players will be able to step up and Pep Guardiola can do everything possible to make sure our season begins on the right note.
