Perhaps a greater gift than the Spanish Supercup itself was the return of our best player and goalscorer, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo was running at full speed last night (albeit not at the superhuman rate of Gareth Bale) and he was terrorizing defences with his normal divine panache. Furthermore, he was striking the ball with incredible power, as you may have seen in the second goal he scored.
Now, six months ago, none of us would be surprised at this, so what’s the big deal?
Of course the big deal is that we have been stressing over his fitness since April and I have been afraid that we may see him physically decline to the same effect of Lionel Messi’s fall from grace last season. But, it seems Ronaldo is truly and undeniably, unstoppable. Thank goodness that Ronaldo is such a fantastic physical specimen.
The display of full fitness that we saw last night has now removed any doubt in my mind that Real Madrid will be dominating the footballing world in this season to come and that, as Ronaldo himself has predicted, we will be the first team to successfully defend the Champions League.
