It’s just as well we don’t have too many pre-season tournaments or cups in our premiership anymore because if you look at the format that the pre-season used to be structured in, it definitely favoured ‘the big two’; Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, and it still does because the biggest pre-season cup competition at the moment is the Carling Black Label Cup, and guess which teams are featured?
You guessed it! From the days of the Vodacom Challenge, where both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates invited overseas clubs to play in a one day tournament (by the way Bloemfontein Celtic spent at least 3 seasons having Vodacom as their main sponsors so I don’t know how they were never included in this tournament), to the Telkom Charity Cup, which dictated that the supporters call in and vote for their teams participation... guess which teams received the most votes to participate? Right again!
As much as football is a commercial sport and it’s all about the ching that is generated, the PSL should look more into organising pre-season spectacles that feature other clubs as well.
...can’t always be watching Chiefs and Pirates all the time!
