Mamelodi Sundowns is a club brimming with international stars, but the left-back position remains a problematic one.
In the three games played so far this season, a lot of the opposition’s attacks have come down that side and it’s time this is addressed by the club.
Punch Masenamela was at one stage the sure bet for a place in the starting line-up, but he fell down the pecking order and the club is still discussing the issue of his future. In came Mzikayise Mashaba, who provided stability and did his best, despite being a natural left-winger.
Mashaba is currently out injured and Tebogo Langerman has come in to fill the gap, but he has not covered himself in glory. He has more attacking instincts than defending ones.
This begs the questions: with the club having signed so many players at right-back and in other positions, why have they not seen it fit to strengthen the left-back position?
Until recently, a player like Keegan Ritchie was available. It’s about time that we go out there and sign a quality left-back who will be able to instil confidence in his teammates and pose a threat to opposition wingers.
Do you think Sundowns should sign a left-back?
