I have kept a close on George Lebese since he made his debut for Kaizer Chiefs way back in 2008 and, needless to say, there was a lot of hype surrounding the player mainly due to the fact that he shares the same surname with a former Chiefs legend who would get us screaming with his skilful touches, the late Thabang Lebese (no relation to George Lebese).
As expected, when the young Lebese was called into action he delivered from a technical point of view showing the silky touches that would endear him in all our hearts.
Today Lebese has somewhat abandoned the technical style of his play, and has built his game around vision, the ability to pass the ball and running in the wide areas, though he still shows his flamboyant moves from time to time.
Whether this was an intentional decision on his part to develop into a more complete attacking winger or due to advice from the coach (with the latter probably being the real reason) George needs to come into his own, both from a creative and goal scoring point of view. Now 25, Lebese should be one of the most talked about players in the PSL and command a regular place at Bafana.
I believe it’s time George Lebese realises his true potential or he will be another exciting player who never truly excites. Can Lebese grow into the player we hope him to be?
