You’re not a massive club until you can win the Caf Champions League. In Europe, it’s hard to deny that previous statement is not the hard truth.
Real Madrid have won the Champions League 10 times. AC Milan have done it on seven occasions. Bayern Munich has five trophies to their name as well.
In Africa, Al-Ahly have won the continent’s premier tournament eight times. TP Mazembe and Zamalek trail just behind them in terms of success.
We at Chiefs – arguably one of Africa’s biggest clubs in terms of influence and wealth – have never even come close to winning one Caf crown. In fact, we are minnows when it comes to success in Africa, and this has to change!
So, it made my heart glad when I read Glamour Boys star, Siboniso Gaxa, speaking so determinedly about Chiefs’ participation in the 2014/15 instalment of the competition.
He said in edition 882, “The Champions League, for me it is a good thing. I would like to see the club going to Africa again and participating in the Caf Champions league. This is what we get paid for...”
But, we demand not only participation but also success! It’s about time we write Chiefs name down as truly being one of the world’s biggest clubs. Amakhosi for life!
Have your say - Are we really a big club if we never win anything in Africa's premier tournament?
