Since Javi Martinez got injured in the Supercup game against Dortmund, we have found ourselves short of a centre back in the squad.
Now, Pep Guardiola has come out and said that we won’t need a new defender and that he will only search the transfer market if somebody is available.
But the fact is, we only have three fit central defenders right now. Dante, Holger Badstuber and Jerome Boateng are all good players, but, especially in Badstuber’s case, there is no guarantee all three will remain fit, themselves, all season. Martinez will be out for a long, long time.
Trying to run a long campaign, as we most likely will, in three competitions with such little depth is a risky gamble. Hopefully our club will make the smart decision and find a defender that can assure us of adequate depth in the centre of defence.
