New Kaizer Chiefs signing, Katlego Mphela, was arguably the biggest news of the January transfer window. The player’s excellent record for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana had at one point made him the most feared hit-man in the country.
However, in the past season-and-a-half, Mphela’s performance for both the Brazilians and Bafana, have cooled off and with it his prolific goal scoring rate. Injuries and off-the-field issues have perhaps contributed to his declining form.
Nonetheless, it still appears Chiefs have acquired potentially a lethal weapon if he can get back to full match fitness and sharpness. One negative seems to be that he could be spending a long time on the sidelines at Chloorkop before his current contract with Downs expires in June.
With Knowledge Musona expected to extend his deal with Chiefs beyond this season, how can Chiefs best use 'Killer' upfront? Bernard Parker is virtually guaranteed to start up front if he’s fit every week due to his continued excellent form. While the versatile Musona is developing a nice understanding with Parker as well.
It puts into question just how coach Stuart Baxter will be able to use Mphela in his starting line-up given the dangerous and dynamic pairing he already has upfront. Could Mphela become an impact player who has to do his best work in limited minutes off the bench?
Why not have your say...how can Chiefs best use ‘Killer’ next season?
