On Wednesday evening we grabbed a fine victory over our major title rivals, Bayern Munich, in the German Supercup.
Many people will point to Bayern’s much depleted starting XI as an indication as to why we managed the win. I, however, would like to point out that we also had a lesser side fielded on the pitch.
We were missing our two biggest stars, Marco Reus and Mats Hummels, and a few other players, such as Ilkay Gündogan. So, beyond the respective qualities of the players on the pitch, I think we need to take note of the fact that Jürgen Klopp was tactically far superior to Pep Guardiola and the high pressing 4-4-2 that he employed completely ruined Bayern’s possession-based game.
The performance of our team is praiseworthy and I believe we can take a lot of positive from this win and, hopefully, it will raise our hopes for a Bundesliga title this season.
