Since Cuthbert Malajila departed for Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the campaign, there appears to be a gaping hole in the heart of Maritzburg United’s striking department. Simply put – there doesn’t appear to be anyone to replace him as a source of goals.
New signing, Yakubu Mohammed, has struggled to adjust to life in the PSL and has just one goal to his name. Terrance Mandaza is also struggling to hit the heights as well. At one stage former coach Clinton Larsen was forced to field Orlando Smeekes as a makeshift centre-forward as he desperately sought out someone who could score some goals.
Smeekes is by trade more of a winger and at 32 hardly seems to be the future of the club in the goalscoring department. With United seemingly set to be engulfed in a relegation dogfight in 2014, it begs the question – do Maritzburg need to bring in a striker to get them out of trouble?
Why not have your say...how important is that the Team of Choice prioritize signing a striker?
