This week former Orlando Pirates star Steve ‘Chippa’ Lekoelea explains why Pirates have started badly in the league this season and slams the Bucs strikers for not scoring goals. Chippa also makes his prediction for Sunday’s MTN clash between Bidvest Wits and Pirates.
On Bucs poor start to the season
I think the reason why the team has performed badly in the league is because the players are not putting too much effort in trying to win league games. I think their main focus is to win the MTN8. The Bucs players need to change this mind set because they are playing for a big club, where they are expected to win everything. What will happen if they end up losing the MTN8 and they are far behind in the league? They could end up with nothing. Having said that, I think it’s too early to judge them.
On strikers’ failure to score goals
For a team that has so many quality strikers, I must say that it’s rather disappointing to see that none of them have scored a goal in the team’s opening two games. What’s more disappointing is to see them missing chances like it was the case in the game against Moroka Swallows. Had they converted their chances, Pirates would have won the Soweto derby, but they let the team down by missing easy chances. I hope they find their scoring form soon because Pirates can’t rely on penalties, like the two that Oupa Manyisa has scored for them so far.
On MTN8 clash against Bidvest Wits
This is a very tough game for Bucs and I think it’s going to end in a draw. I know that Pirates beat Wits in the final of the Nedbank Cup last season, but Wits are tough to beat at home, so this one will be a draw. A draw will suit Pirates because they can then finish the game off at Orlando Stadium next week. I’m hoping though that Pirates will win this one, so that they can have advantage going into the second leg.
