Thomas Vermaelen’s sale to Barcelona has opened a window of opportunity for Arsenal. We’ve received a reasonable amount of money for the Belgian and he’s now left a vacant position in our squad.
We always suffer from an injury crisis every season and I wouldn’t be surprised to see our first choice centre backs, Per Mertesacker, and Laurent Koscielny pick up injuries at some point in the season.
Beyond those two, we lack quality in the position and we need to find somebody to provide cover and/or challenge for the starting roles.
There aren’t a lot of options out there for us, but money is on our side, and so, for now, is time. I want to see Wenger assert his authority on the transfer market and look at a top quality centre back in the form of Dortmund’s Hummels or perhaps Roma’s Mehdi Benatia.
This is the kind of action in the summer transfer window that could see our title race continue right through to the final day of the season or, with failure to do so, go up in smoke halfway through the season.
