Mario Gotze arrived at Die Roten last season with great expectations. However, Mario was only able to make 20 appearances last season. This was due in part to injury, but mostly because Toni Kroos was such a key figure at the club last season. What’s more, seven of Gotze’s appearances were off the bench.
He was definitely second-choice for Pep Guardiola.
This season, however, things should change. Kroos has left for Real Madrid and Gotze will have much more opportunity to make an impact. After scoring the winning goal in the World Cup Final against Argentina, Gotze is starting to emerge from his shell that he’s been hiding in since his controversial transfer from Borussia Dortmund.
This was evident against his former club, against whom he made a substitute appearance in the 59th minute of the German Supercup.
Gotze had a passing accuracy of 82% with his 11 attempted passes and won 100% of his aerial duels, with 19 touches and one successful dribble.
Bearing in mind he was not fully fit and only got to play for 31 minutes as part of a losing team, Gotze looks ready to take the new season head on and I’m hoping that we will see him at his best this season.
