Why Chiefs’ New Signing Is Called ‘Teddy’…

Kaizer Chiefs’ latest addition, Anthony Akumu, has an interesting nickname that he brings with him to South Africa, and he’s explained why his friends and teammates call him ‘Teddy’.

Akumu was confirmed by the Glamour Boys this week after putting pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal with Amakhosi following his exit from ZESCO United, with the 27-year-old coming in as a free agent to bolster Ernst Middendorp’s midfield options.

It remains to be seen whether he’s gotten his work permit to play in South Africa just yet, but even if he did get it in time then a debut against Black Leopards this weekend could potentially be a long shot for the Kenyan international.

His nickname is football related, as you might imagine, rather than anything to do with bears, and it turns out it comes from Manchester United great, Teddy Sheringham, from back when he was a kid.

Giving some background on the ‘Teddy’ nickname, the midfield man told Chiefs’ official website, “I grew up in a place called Mathare in Nairobi, and that is where I started playing football… In this area the guys were Manchester United fans and at the time there was the great United team with Ryan Giggs and Dwight Yorke, so the guys used to call me Teddy after the striker former Man Utd and England striker Teddy Sheringham.”

Despite not playing as a striker, Chiefs fans will be hoping that – like his namesake – Akumu can get among the goals for his new club, with supporters eagerly anticipating his debut in Amakhosi colours.
