Kaizer Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter has revealed the reason why the club’s ardent fans will have to wait a while longer to see the club’s marquee signing, Keagan Dolly, who will be hoping he is ready in time to face his former club, Mamelodi Sundowns.
Dolly’s signing was met with much fanfare by the Chiefs faithful, with the 28-year-old’s capture on a free transfer sending a clear signal of intent from the Glamour Boys this season.
The former Montpellier attacker was part of Chiefs’ 2021/22 jersey launch on Sunday, but that is as close as he’ll get to donning the Amakhosi shirt - at least for now, according to Baxter.
“Well I’ll be honest, we’ve taken Keagan in a situation where he hasn’t played for quite a while and he’s had a period of inactivity and that means he’s put on some weight and that weight has got to go; and in the meantime while he’s doing that, he’s got to learn how we play,” Baxter told the media when asked about Dolly’s readiness this season.
“So, Keagan will be a bit away but if the players are putting their hands up to say well Keagan when you are fit, you have to throw your hat in the ring for a place,” he said.
Chiefs’ first match of the season is against Sundowns in the MTN8 on 14 August, although Baxter would not reveal if the left-footed maestro would be available for the clash.
“Keagan is gonna take a while, but I like Keagan Dolly as a player and when he’s fit, he will give us another dimension,” Baxter explained.
Chiefs’ new number 10 was at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday where he watched his teammates lift the Carling Black Label Cup after beating archrivals Orlando Pirates 4-3 on penalties.
