Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns seem to be in a two-horse race for the 2019/20 Absa Premiership title, but based on their current form, who would lift the title?
The Glamour Boys are currently four points ahead of the Brazilians with 44 points to 40, however Ernst Middendorp’s side have played one more game than their counterparts under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane.
With the league at a standstill because of the Coronavirus pandemic, which currently has no end in sight as things stand, Soccer Laduma looked at the mathematics of the situation to see who would clinch the title based on form alone.
Over the last 10 league games since the start of December, Sundowns are averaging 2.3 points per game in the Absa Premiership, while Chiefs have seen their average drop to 1.7 points per game in the same time frame after seeing their form falter in 2020.
With that in mind, if that form was to continue then Masandawana would pick up just under 21 points from their remaining nine games and take them to a tally of 65 points for the season, while Amakhosi’s average would see them hit secure around 14 more points and take them to 62.
Of course there are lots of variables that would have to be taken into consideration such as injuries, suspensions and so on, and the fact that both teams still have to play each other means that a lot could change in that one game alone.
In reality, there’s still plenty to play for as the likes of SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United all remain mathematically in the fight for the title, though Middendorp and Mosimane are the frontrunners.
When, or if, football returns this year, who do you think will go on to lift the Absa Premiership title?
