Who Remains After Latest Amakhosi Keeper Exit?
Kaizer Chiefs had promised wholesale changes as their disappointing 2018/19 season came to an end, and their goalkeeping department is one that has already seen two exits…
The Glamour Boys had Itumeleng Khune who started the season as their number one, thought he was replaced by Virgil Vries when injury struck. Vries was consequently knocked down the pecking order after a string of errors and saw Daniel Akpeyi replace him, however the Nigerian – partly down to being cup-tied – saw Bruce Bvuma often start in his place.
Meanwhile, Brylon Petersen – who made it onto the bench a few times – and teenager, Karabo Molefe, were also training with the senior side under the watchful eye of Lee Baxter, with the club having first team keepers that ranged from 16-years-old to 32-years-old over the course of the campaign.
Now, with Vries having agreed to a mutual termination after less than a year at Naturena, and Petersen having been told that his contract with the Glamour Boys will not be renewed, will Ernst Middendorp be making any other recommendations regarding his goalkeeping department?
Khune, who is dealing with a long-term injury, will always be seen as the club’s number one when fit, so questions have been asked about Akpeyi – who is a year older – when the club’s captain is back fit again, especially with the emergence of Bvuma as he went on to land a spot in Stuart Baxter’s Africa Cup of Nations spot.
With Petersen and Vries gone, young Molefe is expected to be the number one choice for Arthur Zwane’s Multichoice Diski Challenge side for next season, leaving Khune, Akpeyi and Bvuma to battle it out in the senior team.
Which goalkeeper do you think should be Middendorp’s number one in 2019/20?
