Goalkeeper Says Goodbye At Chiefs…
Virgil Vries only managed to play a play a handful of games for Kaizer Chiefs, and lasted less than a year at the club, but he has a message for supporters after his exit was confirmed.
The Glamour Boys announced earlier today that the 29-year-old Namibian was on his way out of Chiefs after they had agreed to the mutual termination of his contract at the club, with the goalkeeper leaving Naturena with immediate effect.
Having made just eight domestic appearances since signing a three-year deal at the start of the season, Vries fell out of favour under Ernst Middendorp earlier in the year after a mistake against Cape Town City led to them signing Daniel Akpeyi.
The goalkeeper kept four clean sheets in his eight games in the Absa Premiership, MTN8, Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup, conceding six goals along the way, but hasn’t made Middendorp’s squad at all since February.
Now, after his departure was confirmed, Vries told the club’s official website, “It’s been a pleasure and a great experience to don the Kaizer Chiefs jersey. I thank everyone for their support during my stay at the club.”
It remains to be seen where the former Baroka man will now end up, though he will have wait until the new season begins before he is able to play again and could well go to the African Cup of Nations as a free agent.
