In what has been a turbulent month for Kaizer Chiefs, there’s been confirmation of another new deal at the club…
Chiefs recently announced that they had exercised a one-year option in Daniel Cardoso’s contract that would keep him there until the end of the 2020/21 season, but now it’s been explained that he’s gone and committed to the club for a much longer period.
As reported in this week’s issue of Soccer Laduma, the 31-year-old has now penned a deal with the Glamour Boys that could take him beyond his 34th birthday if the one-year option on his new two-year deal is exercised in 2022.
JS Sports, Cardoso’s current representatives, confirmed the player’s new contract in this week’s edition, saying, “He’s signed a new contract, yes. Chiefs were good enough to exercise the one-year option, but we wanted to go further than that so we negotiated a new deal that could potentially run until 2023.
“I think credit must go to Chiefs for the faith that they’ve shown in Daniel, often clubs can turn their backs on players over the age of 30, but they’ve chosen to back him for several years to come.”
Now, with the club having been slapped with a two-window transfer ban by FIFA over the signing of Andriamirado 'Dax' Andrianarimanana, the club is likely to be focusing on making sure they don’t lose players who could make up for the fact that they are unable to bring in any new faces.
Cardoso has played every single minute of Amakhosi’s push to the top of the Absa Premiership so far having become a central figure at the heart of Ernst Middendorp’s defence, and his new long-term deal will be seen as reward for his efforts in the black and gold jersey.
Did Chiefs make the right decision in extending Cardoso’s contract?
