With the Soweto Derby set to be played this weekend, Soccer Laduma looks back at some of the most memorable goal celebrations in the country’s biggest game.
There have been some memorable Soweto Derby moments and pictures which tell a story of how important the goals were on the day.
For example, Collins Mbesuma got on the scoresheet in 2012 while in the colours of Pirates. When he was at Chiefs, Mbesuma did not get to score against Pirates, so it was a big moment to finally break his duck in the Soweto Derby.
Earlier that year, Benni McCarthy bagged a first-half brace in a 3-2 victory over Amakhosi. It remains one of the most memorable derbies in the PSL era, as the game produced five goals.
Another player to score a brace in the derby in the PSL is Excellent Walaza, who lit up Kings Park Stadium with two goals in a four-goal thriller in 2007. In that same game, Mabhuti Khenyeza scored the fastest goal in derby history. Arthur Zwane also scored in a game which ended 2-2.
A year before this encounter, Shaun Bartlett scored an equalizer in a 1-1 draw. The goal was scored with seconds remaining on the clock and it was the last one netted at the Old FNB Stadium.
