The Difference Between Komphela Before And After Chiefs

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma this week, Steve Komphela described his journey as a head coach and specifically mentioned his growth before and after his time at Kaizer Chiefs.

Komphela was at the helm of Amakhosi from July 2015 until April 2018, where he subsequently joined Bloemfontein Celtic for a short stint before his current reign at Golden Arrows.

The 52-year-old head coach is now on his way to his 20th year milestone as a head coach and in an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Komphela reflected on his growth period and the difference between himself before and after being at the helm of Chiefs.

“We always grow. There’s also a difference between Steve Komphela at Celtic and Steve Komphela at Arrows. And there’s going to be a different Steve Komphela from Arrows going forward. There’s a difference in the Steve Komphela from yesterday and today. You always grow. I fully agree that the environments are extremely different and the environment I was in at Chiefs… inasmuch as we were building a new phase with a new generation, the level of expectation remained,” he explained.

“The sad part was that we were a new cycle that had nothing to do with patience. You needed to get results. Let me just give you a picture. The first year we had the end-product of Stuart Baxter. The players had achieved a certain degree of success and obviously they were nearing the end of their career. In the second year, we still had a few of those individuals. Now you are trying to bring in the young ones… that’s the second year. All of a sudden, you feel the pressure and you are trying to explain yourself, but nobody wants to know. And then, the third year, the pressure valve is just unbearable. I could cope with that, I don’t have a problem. But lack of clarity andunderstanding of the process was just unbelievable. And it’s accompanied by race – you can’t run away from that,” Komphela added.
