Stats – Komphela Outperforming Chiefs, Proving Them Wrong?

This season, former Kaizer Chiefs coach, Steve Komphela is outperforming Amakhosi, with more wins in the PSL than the club he left under a cloud.

After his departure from Naturena, Komphela took over Bloemfontein Celtic and did a fine job there under very trying circumstances. At the time he left Siwelele, they were in 7th position with 21 points from 15 games. He joined Lamontville Golden Arrows in January with the club in 10th position with 16 points from their 15 matches at that stage. He has since taken 16 points from 11 games at Abafana Bes'thende and taken the side to a Nedbank Cup semi-final.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs have managed 37 points in their 26 games this season under Giovanni Solinas and Ernst Middendorp, the same total that Komphela has accrued with fewer resources at Celtic and Arrows. However, the Kroonstad-born coach has won 10 games compared to Chiefs’ nine.

Kaizer Chiefs chairman, Kaizer Motaung admitted to the Chiefs official website in January that Komphela had not had as strong of a squad to work with last season compared to this season: “As far as acquisitions are concerned, when we brought in Solinas, we had assembled a very good squad, much better than the one Steve Komphela had to work with.”

The two clubs are in Nedbank Cup action next weekend. Komphela’s Arrows side host TS Galaxy, whilst Kaizer Chiefs travel to Chippa United. Should Arrows and Amakhosi both win, Komphela would face his former club in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 18 May.

Under Middendorp, Chiefs have won five of their 12 games, taking 19 points – 1.58 points per game. The German coach significantly outperformed Solinas and has a better points-per-game record than Komphela this season, but with far better players at this disposal.

However, Komphela, the club had 39 points from 26 games at this stage last season (1.5 points-per-game) which is two points more than Amakhosi currently have and much closer to Middendorp’s current record.
