Nurkovic Opens Up On Chiefs Exit

Once a Kaizer Chiefs fan favourite, Samir Nurkovic has opened up on his departure from the Soweto giants, revealing what went wrong during his stint at Naturena.

The Serbian hitman arrived at Chiefs from Slovakian club KFC Komarno in July 2019 as an unknown figure but made an immediate impact with 14 goals and six assists in 31 matches in his first season.

However, his last two seasons at the Glamour Boys were predominantly hampered by injuries, and his numbers declined, which inevitably saw him part ways with the club last month.

In an interview with Soccer Laduma in his home country Serbia, Nurkovic insists that he has put his experience at Chiefs behind him as he weighs up his options amid interest from South Africa and abroad.

“I am happy that I have been part of such a big club, such a beautiful and good environment,” said Nurkovic.

“I joined Amakhosi from a small city in Serbia, and that’s a big thing, and I must say, the Chiefs chapter has been the best in my career so far.”

Nurkovic, who spent some time on the sidelines due to injury, also suggested that Amakhosi rushed him back into action hence the dip in form.

"My last two seasons, most of the games, I played while injured, and I couldn’t perform at my best. But it's normal as Chiefs couldn't wait for me forever to recover because, at the time, they needed players, they couldn’t sign anybody [FIFA transfer ban], and I understand.

“Everybody saw my first season at Chiefs, and I can’t just like that, forget to play football overnight; that’s ridiculous.”

The 29-year-old also said he leaves the Soweto giants with a heart full of gratitude as he grew as a person and player during this three-year stint at Chiefs.

“I am leaving Chiefs with a full heart, and a grateful heart, but it is time for the new chapter,” he said.

“I just need to set up my mindset now; I am currently at home, spending some time with family and taking care of my ill father, recharge the batteries and start all over again.”

Overall, Nurkovic made 78 appearances, scored 21 goals, and provided 10 assists during his time in Soweto.

Dumisani Zuma and Bernard Parker are part of this list of players released by Chiefs:
