Chiefs & Bucs Stars Top List As Zimbabwe Name Strong AFCON Squad

The Zimbabwe national team will have a number of players from the Premier Soccer League, including Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates stars, in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Chiefs defender Teenage Hadebe and teammate Khama Billiat, as well as the Pirates duo of Marshall Munetsi and Kudakwashe Mahachi are among many PSL players named in Zimbabwe’s squad for the upcoming AFCON by former Free State Stars coach Sunday Chidzambwa, who is the man in charge of the Warriors.

Only five Zimbabwe-based players made it into the team as the selectors opted for players plying their trade outside of the country.

The squad as confirmed from the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) is as follows:

Goalkeepers: George Chigova (Polokwane City), Edmore Sibanda (Witbank Spurs), Elvis Chipezeze (Baroka), Talbert Shumba (Chapungu)

Defenders: Dennis Dauda (Lusaka Dynamos), Lawrence Mhlanga (FC Platinum), Jimmy Dzingai (Power Dynamos), Byron Madzokere (Yadah Stars), Alec Mudimu (CEFN Druids), Teenage Hadebe (Kaizer Chiefs), Divine Lunga (Golden Arrows), Ronald Pfumbidzai (Bloemfontein Celtic), Tendai Darikwa (Nottingham Forest)

Midfielders: Danny Phiri (Golden Arrows), Marshall Munetsi (Orlando Pirates), Marvelous Nakamba (Club Brugge), Butholezwe Ncube (AmaZulu), Tafadzwa Kutinyu (Azam), Ovidy Karuru (AmaZulu), Khama Billiat (Kaizer Chiefs), Kudakwashe Mahachi (Orlando Pirates), Tafadzwa Rusike (Zanaco), Richard Hachiro (Herentals), Talent Chawapihwa (AmaZulu), Leeroy Mavunga (Yadah), Knowledge Musona (Lokeren), Thabani Kamusoko (Young Africans), Rodwell Chinyengetere (Baroka)

Strikers: Nyasha Mushekwi (Dalian Yifang), Evans Rusike (SuperSport United), Walter Musona (Polokwane City), Tinotenda Kadewere (Le Havre), Knox Mutizwa (Golden Arrows), Admiral Muskwe (Leicester City)

As confirmed from Zifa, the same squad will feature at the Cosafa tournament to be held in Durban from May 25 to June 8.

Zimbabwe also have a friendly international match lined up for June 8 against Nigeria, and it has been announced that arrangements have been made for 18 of the players from the 34-member squad will leave the Cosafa squad at some point to play against the Super Eagles.

After the Nigeria match, the Warriors will travel to Egypt for the AFCON tournament, which is scheduled to take place from 21 June to 19 July.
