Parker Relives Tanzania CAF Drama

Bernard Parker has recalled how Kaizer Chiefs, seemingly against all odds, still managed an aggregate victory to progress to the semifinals of the CAF Champions League.

Amakhosi travelled to Tanzania with an impressive 4-0 deficit over Simba SC and on the evidence of the return leg, the job was far from done!

In the end they were beaten 3-0 by the hosts on Saturday, but their scoreline in Johannesburg saw them through to the last four of the competition.

“It was a tough one, very tough. We knew it was going to be this tough and prepared ourselves mentally,” Parker was quoted on the Chiefs website.

“They kept pumping balls forward and kept our defence busy and on the backfoot. They forced errors out of our defence and they managed to get goals. The crowd was rallying them on and we knew they were going to be more motivated and come out guns blazing.”

With Chiefs holding on, they’ve now set up a third meeting with Wydad Casablanca in the Champions League – the Moroccans topped their group earlier in the tournament.

“We can take a lot of positives out of this match going into the next round knowing that whenever we play away, we have to defend with our lives,” added Parker.

“I think if we had given it 10 percent more, we would have got a goal. We looked dangerous on set plays. Every time we got a corner or a free kick, we looked dangerous with a little more belief in ourselves we can go all the way.”
