The Siya crew has been informed that Kaizer Chiefs would be open to selling striker Samir Nurkovic when the transfer window reopens next month.
Indications are that the Serbian forward has attracted interest from Egyptian big spenders, Pyramids, though it’s understood they are yet to table an offer.
Chiefs had to improve the player’s package late last year amid mounting enquires regarding his signature from Al Ahly, Kuwait City and Abha FC of Saudi Arabia with all three outfits pushing to try lure him away from Naturena.
According to insiders, only Kuwait and Abha FC sent proposals to Chiefs but both were rejected as they did not meet the club’s R30-million evaluation of the star striker.
Siya sources had indicated then that Nurkovic had had his head turned because of the prospect of a lucrative contract elsewhere, and Chiefs were already preparing a replacement with Bradley Grobler lined up, but the FIFA ban changed their plans.
Nurkovic arrived at the club two seasons ago and made an immediate impact under then coach Ernst Middendorp, finishing as Chiefs’ top goalscorer in his first year in the Premier Soccer League top-flight and triggering the interest.
Had Amakhosi been able to overturn the transfer ban in October then Nurkovic would have probably been sold for a hefty fee, the Siya crew was informed at the time.
Now, with the FIFA ban being lifted as of July 1 and Chiefs allowed to register new players, word reaching the Soccer Laduma desk is that the club would be willing to let Nurkovic go if Pyramids – or any suitors for that matter, table a concrete offer that makes financial sense for both Chiefs and the player.
Nurkovic, who turns 29 this month, has one more year left on his Amakhosi contract and would be in a position to put pen to paper on a pre-contract in January next year unless he is offered a new deal altogether or Chiefs cash in now.
Another factor that would determine what decision the club takes if a genuine bid comes through the door is the incoming head coach.
Chiefs are still in talks with Stuart Baxter to return for a second stint, so he would be expected to have an input, though if the offer meets the club’s valuation of the player, then it is likely the Glamour Boys will sell Nurkovic.
