How Manenzhe is helping Chiefs’ Mashiane

Former Orlando Pirates striker Phumudzo Manenzhe has explained how he and Kaizer Chiefs player Happy Mashiane have become close in recent times.

Mashiane has been one of Amakhosi’s star performers in recent weeks and Manenzhe recently gave the player some advice while analysing a Chiefs game on television.

After hearing what Manenzhe about him, through his uncle, Mashiane sent the former Pirates striker a direct message on Instagram, thanking him for the advice. Since then, Mashiane texts Manenzhe whenever he needs advice.

Mashiane is likely to be in action when Chiefs visit Pirates at Orlando Stadium in the Soweto derby on Saturday, January 30.

“I am one person who has a soft spot for any player that comes from the development. I know the feeling because I have been there. I’ve been a development player, I’ve been promoted and not get an opportunity and then get an opportunity once or twice and get judged on those opportunities you,” Manenzhe told media at a Babizhe Bonke Soweto Derby event this week.

“Usually when I analyse a player from development, I always try give him the tools on what I am saying and how to change his game. When I looked at the game Chiefs played, I think it was against AmaZulu, I thought that I should express myself and that somebody would listen and let the boy know. I said that a player with his qualities cannot be an inverted winger. He’s not a player you want tucking inside. I said that he and Philani Zulu need to get an understanding, to say that he needs to check where Philani Zulu is. When Zulu tucks in, Mashiane should hug the line. He has an eye for a cross and an eye for goal. I thought I should express myself and someone would let the boy know. I now have the boy’s numbers and now and then he asks me how he has done. It does not mean that if I played for Pirates I cannot assist a young boy who is developing at a young team. I hope to see him doing well over the weekend. He first sent me a DM (on social media) and he was saying thank you for the inputs. I encourage him at all times. There’s a clip I sent him and he was thankful for what I did for him.”
