Ernst Middendorp has said the state of the pitch at Makhulong Stadium stifled the game plan he expected from his Kaizer Chiefs side yesterday.
Amakhosi were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup round of 16 via the penalty shoot-out by Highlands Park at the compact venue in Tembisa, where the field was affected by the heavy rain during the cup tie. The conditions affected both teams.
“I think let’s go to the circumstances under which the game was held here. If you have been part of it for 20 minutes, the conditions, the field, to control the ball and to combine was nearly impossible. To lose through a penalty shoot-out is not what we were thinking,” Middendorp told reporters after the game.
The coach said it was not an excuse for missing out on yet another trophy.
“I think 85 percent of the fields (in the PSL) are very good. But the circumstances, with the rain and the wind and lighting means we had everything here today. It’s not to blame somebody, those are the circumstances and it happens. We could not really play our passing game and whatever else you want to do,” he added.
