Ernst Middendorp handed game-time to two young players in Kaizer Chiefs’ friendly matches against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup as well as the Macufe Cup away to Bloemfontein Celtic at the weekend.
Sizwe Twala and Keletso Sifama, two players who’ve spent most of their time at the club playing for the MultiChoice Diski Challenge team, got a taste of first team football and impressed the German-born coach.
Amakhosi were 4-2 winners on Saturday against Sundowns at FNB Stadium, but succumbed to a 2-0 defeat a day later away to Celtic.
“In addition to some of the changes, we had (Keletso) Sifama, who is 16-years-old and almost scored his first goal at this level. There is also Sizwe Twala and I believe he can learn from Leonardo (Castro), Khama (Billiat), Samir (Nurkovic) and even (Lazarous) Kambole,” Middendorp told the media.
Twala is 22-years-old and was promoted to the first team recently after he finished joint top goalscorer in the MDC last season. The striker made the bench for the first time in an Absa Premiership fixture when Chiefs beat Baroka FC 1-0 and then again in their 2-0 victory over Golden Arrows before the international break.
“He will develop and probably even during the season he will be valuable for us,” the coach said of Twala at the weekend.
