Kaizer Chiefs are understood to be closing in on a replacement for Gavin Hunt, who was relieved of his duties as head coach last week.
The Siya crew reported that Stuart Baxter was now the front runner for the vacant post at Naturena and it was expected that he would return for his second stint at the club that he left in 2015 after winning two league titles.
Molefi Ntseki’s name has also been mentioned by Siya sources as the likely assistant coach, though Chiefs had announced Dillion Sheppard and Arthur Zwane would take over in the interim for at least one of the two remaining DStv Premiership games.
Now, the latest reaching the Siya crew is that Baxter, who spent a few months in Mzansi after he was sacked by Odisha FC earlier this year, is in advanced talks with Amakhosi.
It’s believed that the two parties are currently ironing out the finer details of a potential contract and if all terms are agreed on then Baxter is expected to make his way to South Africa in the coming days to begin his second spell.
Furthermore, the former Bafana Bafana coach is believed to have already rejected an offer abroad and is in favour of a return to the Village instead.
Chiefs’ decision on Hunt did not come as a surprise given the team’s domestic form, though he was at least expected to finish the current season – especially after guiding Amakhosi to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.
The Glamour Boys have two matches to go in the league, they take on Golden Arrows on Wednesday and face TS Galaxy in their final game of the season on Saturday.
It’s not expected that Baxter, if he puts pen to paper, will be available for both matches given that he’d still have to try get a work permit.
But there’s a good chance the Englishman would have sorted out his permit issues by June 18, which is when Chiefs face Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final given that talks are said to be at an advanced stage.
