Khune’s Long-Term Successor Raring To Go

Itumeleng Khune’s long-term replacement at Kaizer Chiefs is raring to go, the Siya crew has been informed.

Soccer Laduma first reported in October last year that coach Gavin Hunt had identified Brandon Petersen, his first choice goalkeeper at the now defunct Bidvest Wits, as a potential successor to Khune, whose career has been ravaged by injuries.

Subsequent to that story, it was then later revealed that Petersen was offered an employment contract at Amakhosi, though the FIFA ban meant he could not be registered for the 2020/21 season – unless the club can be allowed to add free agents to their roster.

On Wednesday, following another poor performance from Khune after he was handed a rare start against AmaZulu, Hunt confirmed to reporters after the 2-1 DStv Premiership defeat that, as far as he understands, Chiefs cannot register free agents until July 1 despite serving the ban on two transfer windows.

The coach also raised concerns over the goalkeeping situation at Naturena given that Daniel Akpeyi has also been conceding a lot lately.

Petersen appears the solution – but only next season.

The Siya crew has been informed that the 26-year-old has fully recovered from a knee injury that kept him from joining a rival Premier Soccer League team at the start of the season, and it’s understood he is expected to continue training with the Glamour Boys.

With the season at the halfway mark, it appears the only way Petersen can be registered elsewhere is if there’s an emergency goalkeeper situation because clubs have their settled No.1 and it’s rare to bring in a goal minder this late in the campaign.

Petersen’s advantage is the facilities at Naturena, where he has been able to complete his rehabilitation programme and acclimatise to the demands at Chiefs, though he is still not yet part of the first team squad.

Amakhosi, who dropped out of the Top 8 on Wednesday, have conceded 19 goals in 16 league matches so far this season.
