They were once household names in South African football; however, these players have seen their values rapidly decrease over the years. In light of this, Soccer Laduma takes a look at eight DStv Premiership stars whose market values have dropped in millions.
Last season, Khama Billiat was regarded as the most expensive player in the Kaizer Chiefs line-up, however, according to the figures on Transfermarkt.com, the 30-year-old has seen a massive drop in his value from January to now.
In January this year, Billiat’s market value was at €1.5m (±R26.0m) and it has since dropped to €1.3m (±R22.53m).
The player’s spell with Amakhosi las largely been dominated by lengthy spells on the sidelines, with the Zimbabwean failing to make an impact. Billiat is now into his fourth season with Chiefs and to date, has made 92 appearances for the club. In that time, he has scored 18 goals, while setting up 18 more for his teammates.
Another player who has experienced a major drop in his market value is Chiefs left back, Sifiso Hlanti who joined Amakhosi at the start of the 2021/22 season.
In January, the experienced left back was valued at €1m (±R17.33m), but now saw a drop to €775k (±R13.43m).
Hlanti spent the last season with Swallows FC where he showed glimpses of the player that set the scene alight with Bidvest Wits. The 31-year-old appears to be coach Stuart Baxter’s first choice left back this season and has made six appearances so far this campaign.
