Chiefs Icon Favourite To Become Hunt’s No.2?

A Kaizer Chiefs icon is understood to be set for a return to Naturena as an assistant to Gavin Hunt, who is in pole position for the vacant head coach position.

Doctor Khumalo could be set for a sensational comeback following last week’s decision by the club to part ways with Ernst Middendorp and Shaun Bartlett, leaving goalkeeper coach Lee Baxter as the only surviving member of the technical team.

According to Siya sources, Amakhosi are in advanced talks with Hunt for him to permanently replace Middendorp, and indications now are that Khumalo could be part of his backroom staff – making this the third time he is an assistant at Naturena.

Khumalo was Stuart Baxter’s assistant coach between 2012 and 2015, he also remained in a similar capacity when Steve Komphela took over five years ago.

The 53-year-old then moved to Baroka FC as the technical director at the start of the 2017/2018 season, which ended in him become the interim coach and saving the club from being relegated and subsequently moving on.

When contacted by the Siya crew about his possible return to Naturena, the former Bafana Bafana midfielder said no one from Chiefs had discussed anything with him.
