Chiefs Newbie Expects More

He bagged an assist and helped Kaizer Chiefs pick up three points, but Kearyn Baccus says that he expects more from himself after making his Amakhosi debut at the weekend.

The 27-year-old midfield man was handed a starting berth by Ernst Middendorp on Sunday as Chiefs went up against Highlands Park in the 2019/20 Absa Premiership opener, and he didn’t take long to make an impact as he set up Lebogang Manyama for their first goal of the campaign.

Now, with a game against Black Leopards on the horizon, the Durban-born former Melbourne City man says that he didn’t perform at the level he knows he’s capable of, promising to work hard in order to prove his worth at Naturena.

Speaking to Chiefs’ official website, Baccus said, “I was very happy to make my debut. I didn’t perform as I wanted though... Before any match I try and relax as much as I can. At camp I shared a room with Leonardo Castro, we watched movies and had some interesting conversations. The coach told me on Sunday morning that Leo was unfortunately struggling with an injury.

“Another win this weekend will be key… My families watched on and were happy to see me playing for Chiefs. I wish to play in Durban. I will work hard. With more training and matches, I will get to my best.”

Baccus played 45 minutes against the Lions of North last weekend, and will be eager to get more minutes under his belt as Chiefs aim for back-to-back wins for the first time since March.
