Big Praise For Amakhosi Youth
It may have been a bad season for Kaizer Chiefs’ senior team, but it would appear that the club’s youth team are making big strides as they plan for the future of Amakhosi.
The club’s youth sides that are competing in the Gauteng Development League all continued their unbeaten runs in the competition so far, with games taking place against Wits Juniors (at Marks Park) and Elspark (at Naturena) over the course of this month.
Chiefs’ official website made mention of the results that have been picked up in recent games, saying, “The impressive Chiefs U-13 side kept up their 100%-win record in the league as they dispatched Wits Juniors 3-0 and then put five past Elspark in a 5-0 drubbing this past weekend… Keeping pace with log leaders, the Chiefs U-15 side played to a goalless draw against Wits Juniors but bounced back to beat Elspark 3-0.
“Still undefeated in their stream is the Chiefs U-17 side which drew 2-2 against Wits Juniors before handing Elspark six of the best in a 6-0 thumping. The Chiefs U-19 side won 6-0 against Wits Juniors before massacring Elspark 10-2 to move to the top of the log.”
Head of Development, Sundra Govinder, explained that their players in each age group are getting younger, and still managing to get good results and represent the club well.
When asked about their progress Govinder said, “In the last two matches, we used younger boys in each team. We had about four or five 10-year olds playing in the U-13 team and then completing the game with 11-and 12-year old. We needed to play the younger boys to see how far along they are in their development.
“All our teams have an identity; they play the same quality football. They already know the importance of playing for the brand.”
Ernst Middendorp, a man who has famously looked to youth in his senior teams, will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the youngsters coming through the Glamour Boys’ ranks, and there may well be a chance for some of the older boys to take the step up into top-flight football in the 2019/20 season.
