Safety For Amakhosi Quartet After Duo Excluded
Ernst Middendorp’s decision to leave out Daniel Cardoso and Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya for Kaizer Chiefs seems to have paid off, with two others managing to avoid a nightmare.
Cardoso and Ntiya-Ntiya were two players that found themselves just one yellow card away from suspension going into the final week of the Absa Premiership, while Leonardo Castro and Dumsani Zuma were also on the verge of potentially missing the crucial Nedbank Cup final.
For that reason, Middendorp opted to leave out his two defenders completely as they didn’t even travel with the team to Port Elizabeth for the 1-0 defeat against Chippa United, while Castro and Zuma – a second half substitute – returned to Johannesburg without that dreaded fourth booking.
The German will now have an almost full strength side to choose from going into the Nedbank final with TS Galaxy, with the likes of Lebogang Manyama and Erick Mathoho having now returned from their long-term injuries, and the aforementioned quartet all still in contention for selection.
Missing out on next season’s MTN8 by finishing ninth in the league (the club’s worst final position since 2006/07) will be a bitter pill to swallow for a club of Chiefs’ size, however a win in Durban this weekend may help to ease that pain as they look forward to better fortunes in 2019/20.
