He’s the freshest face at Kaizer Chiefs, and could be their last signing for a while, but the club’s latest debutant was surprised to get in so quickly...
Anthony Akumu was snapped up by the Glamour Boys in January after he decided against signing a new deal with ZESCO United, penning a contract at Naturena.
After FIFA banned Chiefs from signing any other players for the next two transfer windows regarding the transfer of Andriamirado "Dax" Andrianarimanana back in 2018, meaning that Akumu could be their last signing until mid-2021.
The 27-year-old hasn’t been in South Africa for too long, but has already achieved what James Kotei couldn’t, a competitive debut, as he came on late into the 1-0 win over Royal Eagles in the Nedbank Cup.
Speaking to the club’s official website, ‘Teddy’ admitted that he didn’t expect to play so soon, saying, “I was looking forward to getting a chance to play... I did not know it would come so early, for that I thank the technical team and my teammates for their support. I also thank God because everything went well for us and me personally.
“It’s a great thing, I am so happy to have been part of the game against Royal Eagles and made history, I am looking forward to playing more and getting more game time as the season progresses.”
Chiefs now turn their attentions to Maritzburg United today as they seek to extend their lead at the top of the table, and their new signing will be eager to get more minutes under his belt for Ernst Middendorp’s side at FNB Stadium.
