Kaizer Chiefs will stay top of the Absa Premiership win, lose or draw against Mamelodi Sundowns, and Ernst Middendorp says they’re looking forward to the encounter…
The Glamour Boys have played more than both of their early title rivals, Bidvest Wits and Sundowns, and currently find themselves four points clear of the Clever Boys and five points ahead of Masandawana, but that could all change very quickly if things don’t go their way.
Chiefs and Sundowns lock horns on Sunday afternoon in what is due to be the game of the weekend in South Africa, but Middendorp and his technical team are waiting to hear whether they will be at full strength or not after injuries disrupted their penalty shootout victory in the Telkom Knockout over Cape Town City.
Both Kearyn Baccus and Bernard Parker had to be stretchered off in the first half of the game against City before Erick Mathoho sealed victory from the spot, but their coach was pleased with how his side kept things together.
Speaking to Chiefs ‘official website, the German said, “The injuries changed our game plan… We kept the shape until we got the equaliser. The final result matters as we move to the next stage. For now, it is a matter of quickly moving to prepare for the next match… We are looking forward to the short trip across town to face Sundowns.”
Chiefs and Sundowns face off at 15h00 on Sunday afternoon, with the Amakhosi eager to extend their lead at the top of the league table against one of their fiercest rivals.
