There has been a large turnover of players coming and going at Naturena in recent years, with the club regularly terminating player contracts after deciding for – for whatever reason – that they weren’t right for the club.
Less than a year ago, in June 2018, Bobby Motaung was quoted on the club’s official website as saying, “We are terminating the contracts of Twala, Buchanan, Chirambadare and Khumalo… These players are immensely talented, but couldn’t find their form with us. We do not want to keep a good player inactive and that’s why we will allow them to express their talents elsewhere.”
Now, around 11 months later, Chiefs have once again swung the guillotine with the termination of Hendrick Ekstein, Khotso Malope, Gustavo Paez, Virgil Vries and Bhongolethu Jayiya's contracts at the club – and there could be more to come.
In total, not including the youngsters that were sent out on loan, Chiefs have had 13 players leave the club since just before the 2018/19 season got underway – and only one of them, Siphiwe Tshabalala, were they able to make on money on as he made a switch to Erzurumspor in Turkey.
With Jayiya seeing his deal terminated today, there is talk that the exits from Naturena may not be over, but is it a sustainable transfer policy for a club of Amakhosi’s size?
Do you think Chiefs made any mistakes with the 13 players that they’ve released recently?
