Chiefs Praised For Fighting Spirit

Not for the first time this season, Kaizer Chiefs snatched victory from the jaws of defeat over the weekend, and they have been praised for the fight that they showed in Cape Town.

The Glamour Boys looked to be heading out of the Telkom Knockout at the first hurdle as they battled to get level with Cape Town City following Kermit Erasmus’ opener, but Samir Nurkovic stepped up to the late in the dying embers of the game to get them level and take things to extra-time.

Daniel Cardoso, who missed a penalty in normal time, stepped up to convert in the shootout and was followed by Leonardo Castro, Khama Billiat and Erick Mathoho who hit the back of the net to seal victory.

Ernst Middendorp, who is currently leading Chiefs to their best start to a season since 2014/15, was full of praise for his troops, especially after seeing them once again come from behind to get a result.

Speaking to Chiefs’ official website, the German said, “It was expected to be an intense game… We knew they were going to come hard at us. We dominated in the initial stages of the game, but I thought missing the penalty slowed us down a bit. Credit though must go to the team because we fought until the end.

“After missing the penalty, we allowed them to come at us. It is part of the game and it happens to the best in the world. Moments later we conceded against the run of play. It is good that we regrouped and back strongly after making a series of changes.”
