Chiefs' Khune Part Of Distinct Group

Itumeleng Khune may currently not be the first choice shot-stopper at Kaizer Chiefs, though he does from part of a unique group of footballers.

Like Ryan Giggs at Manchester United, Jamie Carragher at Liverpool and Paolo Maldini at AC Milan, Khune is the South African equivalent of an elite list of players who have spent their entire careers at one club. 

Some of Mzansi’s top players have used the Premier Soccer League as a stepping-stone to opportunities abroad, while several others have moved within the League seeking better opportunities. 

As this trend continues in Mzansi and world football, the one-club-man tag has increasingly become a rarity in football.

Joining as a junior, Khune rose through the ranks as a goalkeeper and was given his senior debut as a 20-year-old, by then coach, Muhsin Ertugral. 

Hailed as arguably the best goalkeeper in the country, Khune lost his place in the Amakhosi's starting line-up when the club signed Nigerian international Daniel Akpeyi from Chippa United during the 2019 January transfer window.

The club faced an injury crisis at the time, which included Khune. He was sidelined for nine months due to a shoulder injury.

Despite facing stiff competition from current first-choice keeper, Akpeyi, Khune has been with the Amakhosi for a whopping 21 years.

Notably, his distribution ability and leadership skills are what sets the 32-year-old captain apart from the rest.
